In book 2 of the series, DEADLY INTENT, Maven finds herself as a foster mother for an abandoned child who can’t or won’t communicate with anyone.  She has lots of questions…What’s his story…Why would someone abandon him… Why won’t he communicate? Will she find the answers?

One thing we know about Maven is she won’t stop until she does!

Tomorrow, I’ll have an excerpt from DEADLY INTENT.

Friday Friend–Michelle Ule

Navy wife Michelle Ule is a graduate of UCLA and the author of five novellas and a novel. She lives in northern California with her family where she works at a literary agency, teaches Bible study, plays in a woodwind ensemble, and writes. She’s a long-time lay counselor in both crisis pregnancies and budget counseling. She loves to travel and is an accomplished genealogist. You can learn more about her at www.michelleule.com

Today, Michelle tells us a little about how she researched part of her novel, 12 BRIDES OF SUMMER:

It’s always interesting when you start the research involved with writing any new story. The use of money in a business was a subplot of The Sunbonnet Bride because I’ve known so many women who have tried to run small businesses out of their homes with often limited success.

To that end, I gave Sally Martin a familiar skill—sewing—a slightly unique approach: sewing a sunbonnet whose brim kept its shape even in a tornado; and provided two men with different ideas about using their talents in a disaster.

Sally learned to her surprise that she couldn’t continue to donate her time and talents to help neighbors who have lost their homes, if she didn’t keep back some resources to refresh her supplies. That meant I had to learn how much things cost in 1875 Nebraska.

Google, of course, helped.

Her needs were few: narrow reeds (free from the creek), a thimble, needle, thread and calico. The rest she could do with a borrowed iron and her skills.

How much would it cost to sew a sunbonnet?

A yard of calico cloth cost seven cents a yard, while a spool of thread cost a dime.

I never did learn the cost of a thimble, perhaps they could be handed down, but today on ebay, you can purchase a silver 1875 thimble for $75! Way too expensive for Sally.

A needle? According to Godey’s Magazine, volume 81, published in 1880, you could buy 10 needles for four cents

So, the tools cost about 17 cents for a full yard of material, thread and needle. You could probably get at least two sunbonnets from that much—so a sunbonnet would cost about eight cents in materials to sew. Is that so much to ask.

Her time, of course, was a completely different matter and 1 Timothy 5:18 reminds us “a laborer is worthy of his/her hire.”

Sally’s two very different suitors—Josiah the banker in a pristine suit and Malcolm the teamster sweating as he toted goods to the tornado victims—both argued with her about keeping some of the money as “seed corn” for the sunbonnets she sold.

It was hard for sweet generous Sally, but as she puzzled out what type of businesswoman she wanted to be, she came to see a man’s heart toward the poor was a fine indicator of the type of husband she wanted.

And in the end, it all came down to the purchase of seven sunbonnets!

The Sunbonnet Bride

By Michelle Ule

part of The 12 Brides of Summer, Collection # 1

Bumbling teamster Malcolm MacDougall vies with suave banker Josiah Finch for the hand of the lively hat maker Sally Martin after a tornado touches down in the neighboring communities.

While Josiah sees an opportunity to make plenty of money to support a potential bride in style, Malcolm adds up the facts against his Bible and realizes helping those in need is more important than turning a profit.

When Sally’s hats become the stylish rage of southeastern Nebraska, will she choose a teamster or a banker for her life’s happiness?

Thanks, Michelle, for being my guest today and giving us a glimpse of what it takes to be a historical writer! Good for you–I’ll stick to contemporary!

Until next time…GOD BLESS & GOOD READING!

MY DAISY AFGHAN!

Here’s the first afghan I’ve crocheted in more than 20 years!

daisyafghan

It’s basically the same pattern as the Daisy Dish Towel except I used Double crochets as the basic stitch. After completing three rounds of DC stitches, I would do one single in yellow to finish it. I used 25 squares, but, of course, you could make whatever size you want. Then I put them together and finished with two rounds of shell stitches in yellow to make a border.

Not bad–if I say so myself!

UNTIL NEXT TIME…GOD BLESS, GOOD READING & happy crocheting!

EVEN A HULA HOOP!

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. But what about writers? When the going gets tough, they write! And so I have. GOD, LIFE & HULA HOOPS is the result.

In 2012, I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors. Fortunately they were benign, but as I like to say, there are two definitions for benign. One being non- cancerous, the other meaning harmless—which my brain tumors definitely are not!

My life took a dramatic turn with the diagnosis and is still topsy-turvy to this day. Life isn’t always easy, but there is always hope because God doesn’t leave us alone in our battles.

God is so good! Even before I needed them, God taught me what I needed to stay in his peace and joy, in spite of all the difficulties I face because of the tumors. How did that happen? By learning to listen FOR and TO God.

In GOD, LIFE & HULA HOOPS, I share the “spiritual listening lessons” that have helped me face adversity in, what I hope is, a godly way.

God still speaks and he can use the oddest things to do so—even a hula hoop!

Are you listening?

GOD, LIFE & HULA HOOPS:

God still speaks…but are you listening?

As a retired speech-language pathologist, Lillian knows the importance of listening. God can speak to us in many different ways. There may be weirder examples, but God used the hula hoop to teach the author new insights as well as remind her of long-forgotten gems of wisdom that have helped her face adversity.

The Ceremony of the Blessed Vessel-PART VI

The little old lady smiled her sweet but enigmatic smile. “But no matter how many times I say that at the Ceremony of the Blessed Vessel, no one quite believes me. So I will tell you this about the Princess Path.”

“To become a princess, the path is narrow. Sadly, too narrow for many. As you all continue on your One True Journey, many will turn from the narrow path that leads to becoming a Princess.”

How could anyone not want to be a princess? It was the most honored positon in all the kingdom. Who would someone choose a different path? Why would they even want to?

“As I said many of you—most of you—will not become a Princess, but each of you have the power to become a Princess if that is the path you choose on your One True Journey.”

Could that be true? Could every girl here really become a princess?

“There are no arbitrary cuts on the narrow path. The only way to leave the path is to let your feet lead you astray. But remember this well. Once your feet has taken you on another path, it becomes even more difficult to resume the journey of the narrow path. But not impossible. Nothing is impossible for the Creator.”

But Rose wanted only one path. The narrow path to become a princess. But it sounded almost impossible.

“There will be many who want to lure you from your chosen path whatever it may be. It is your responsibility to not allow others to determine your path. The Creator has indeed created for each of us a One True Journey. But when we allow others to determine our steps…”

She stopped speaking and shook her head. Princess Michella did the same. Both looked so sorrowful that Rose felt sad as well without knowing exactly why.

Princess Lilianna looked out at them. Her smile so sweet, so filled with loved. “The only path to happiness is to complete the One True Journey to its final destination. When you allow others to lure you from that path, you will not find happiness. Instead, you will find pain, sorrow, and heartache.”

The harsh words cut through Rose’s excitement, causing her to tremble. Veronique clasped her arms. Rose could feel her trembling as well. But Bells simply looked excited as if she couldn’t wait to begin her journey. Had she already chosen her path?

Princess Lilianna continued, “Ah, but this is not a day for sadness. But know that you’ve been warned, so take care where you allow your feet to fall. Now it is time for your gift from the Creator. Look down by your feet and you shall find yours.”

Rose did as instructed, shocked to find a small wooden chest on the floor beside her feet. It hadn’t been there a moment ago, had it? And yet she’d seen no one place it there. How had that happened?

The Ceremony of the Blessed Vessel–Part III

“Before Princess Lilianna comes to share her wisdom, I’m here to take care of the more mundane details for this very special day as well as to explain a bit more about what it means to be a Princess-In-Training.” She grinned. “Or as we like to call you, a PIT.”

A few quiet giggles around the room could be heard.

“And in fact, your training could be compared to a pit, if you will. There will be many times when you find yourself in a pit, a problem, or a situation. Call it what you will, but how you choose to get out of that pit will determine if you move forward as a Princess-In-Training or if you fall from the path.”

Fall from the path? Was that possible? Rose grimaced. She didn’t like the sound of that.

“This is the informal part of the day so please feel free to ask questions of me. When Princess Lilianna comes out, that will be a time only for listening, not speaking. Unless, of course, she asks for a response. Then it would just be rude not to answer her.”

A hand near the front went up. Princess Michella motioned for her to stand which she did. “What does that mean? Fall from the path. How does that happen?”

“It can happen in so very many ways, but Princess Lilianna will speak more of it. Now, let me explain how today works. We are here at the Ceremony of the Blessed Vessel, then later we shall watch the Games where all the Knights-in-Training get to show off for you. Then tonight will be the Ball.”

“What happens at the Ball?” A girl shouted out.

Princess Michella clapped her hands with glee. “Oh, the Ball is so much fun. But a word of warning, do not let those pesky Knights-in-Training lure you from your One True Journey.”

What did that mean? Rose thought the One True Journey was about finding her one true love. If that was the case, then how could finding your one true love at the Ball lure you from your One True Journey?

Princess Michella looked around with a smile. When she smiled it was as if the sun was in the room with them. “Princess Lilianna has a few things to share about those Knights-In-Training a little later. Are there any more questions?”

Someone in the group called out, “How will know if we’re still on the right path or have fallen from it?”

“A perfectly good question. I cannot say how exactly since each of you will each have your own journey to complete, but I can say that you will know the truth of your path each step of the way. Do not worry yourself with this. Instead take care of where you allow your feet to fall.”

The truth of your path? Where you allow your feet to fall? Rose wanted to poke Veronique in the ribs to ask her what these things meant, but she didn’t dare speak out. She thought the day was about getting more information on how to become a Princess.

Instead, she only had more questions!

“Good. Good. Good. If there are no more questions, it’s time for Princess Lilianna. Now remember, this is a time for listening and be sure to listen most carefully. Her words are filled with much wisdom. The wisdom you will need to complete your One True Journey.”

Complete her journey and become a Princess. That was exactly what Rose wanted to do. And that is what she meant to do.

“After your visit with the Princess-Of-All-Princesses, I will stay behind to answer all of your questions, and then each of you will be assigned your very own Princess Advisor.”

Finally she would get to see the Princess-Of-All-Princesses, the most beautiful of all in the Kingdom. With such beauty, she must have danced all night long at her first Ball, and probably every one after that.

Would anyone even ask Rose to dance? If not, she would simply die from shame. What a disaster that would be.

From the back of the Great Hall a group of musicians stepped in. Their music was festive and yet solemn. The flute players came first, then the drummers. After them were the players of the lute and then more drummers.

The group moved as one. As they played their feet danced along the way. Tension filled the room as a procession made its way from the back of the Great Hall.

After the musicians came two white steeds with a knight in full armor seated on each. The two horses pulled behind them an ornate but tiny carriage. Then came two more knights walking, each holding a javelin at attention as if perhaps one of them would want to harm Princess Lilianna.

Silky white curtains on the carriage windows blocked the view of the girls as all craned their necks to get a better look. The procession stopped in front of the throne that now waited for the Princess-of-all-Princesses.

A gong sounded once again. Princess Michella motioned for all to stand. The group stood as if one entity and then waited. It seemed as if every girl in the room was holding her breath.

One knight stepped forward. “It is my pleasure to announce Princess Lilianna. The Princess-Of-All-Princesses. The most beautiful Princess in all the Kingdom. The most wise Princess in all the Kingdom. And above all, the kindest in all the Kingdom.”

How could kindness be more important than beauty? What a silly thing to say. Rose leaned forward in anticipation of her first glimpse.

The curtain separated and out stepped….there must be a mistake.

So, the story continues…hope you’re enjoying it!
