Writer of the Day–Michelle Griep

Michelle Griep’s been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas…professionally, however, for the past 10 years. When not squirreled away with laptop in hand, she teaches history and writing classes for a local high school co-op.
Her latest release is A Heart Deceived: A Novel  (Click title for the Amazon Link.)
Here’s te back cover blurb:

Miri Brayden teeters on a razor’s edge between placating and enraging her brother, whom she depends upon for support. Yet if his anger is unleashed, so is his madness. Miri must keep his descent into lunacy a secret, or he’ll be committed to an asylum—and she’ll be sent to the poorhouse.
Ethan Goodwin has been on the run all of his life—from family, from the law … from God. After a heart-changing encounter with the gritty Reverend John Newton, Ethan would like nothing more than to become a man of integrity—an impossible feat for an opium addict charged with murder.
When Ethan shows up on Miri’s doorstep, her balancing act falls to pieces. Both Ethan and Miri are caught in a web of lies and deceit—fallacies that land Ethan in prison and Miri in the asylum with her brother. Only the truth will set them free.

Oh my!  Sounds like a great book. Here’s a short excerpt from the book

Excerpt:

Miri stood tiptoe, looking past the beggar’s shoulder, desperate for a glimpse of Will. Twilight painted the yard with a monotone brush, making it hard to see much past the woodpile. She squinted, yet clearly no one else accompanied the beggar. Ignoring the unwashed odor of the man, she leaned closer, giving him no chance to misunderstand her words. “Where is Will?”

He averted his gaze. “I—”

“Miriall!”

Roland’s footsteps entered the kitchen, slapping the flagstone floor with determination. The last time he’d caught her helping a vagrant, she’d suffered a lecture on how poverty was a judgment of God, not something to be interfered with. Her knees yet recalled those enforced hours of repentance.

Stepping back, she pelted the beggar with directions. “Go to the church. The key is atop a grey stone set out farther than the rest.” Hopefully he heard that last bit over the sound of her slamming the door.

“What are you doing?” Though the words were innocently phrased, Roland’s tone bludgeoned.

She turned and flattened her back against the oak. Evening shadows twisted her brother’s features into a severity that made her glad for the support. Though her mouth dried, she forced lightness to her words. “I heard you at the front door, which reminded me that with Mrs. Makin gone for the night, I’d promised to lock up the back.” For an added touch, she smiled.

He frowned and folded his arms, not buying the explanation she sold.

Bolstering her resolve for the horrid words she’d say next, she lifted her chin. “I am free of duty now and for the rest of the evening.”

Free? Hardly. Not if Roland and Witherskim had their way. She bit the inside of her cheek lest the thought fly out her mouth.

Roland stepped closer and grabbed hold of her upper arm, yanking her from the door and out of the kitchen. “Good. Master Witherskim is waiting.”

Before she could catch her breath, Roland pulled her down the corridor and into the sitting room, where Clive Witherskim advanced.

Wonder what will happen next? Better buy the book and find out!

Marianne Evans is a multi-award winning author of Christian fiction and romance. Her hope is to spread the faith-affirming message of God’s love through the stories He prompts her to create. Connect with her at http://www.marianneevans.com/. Her latest book is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Here’s the back cover blurb:

Political dynamo Matt Bellinger understands he has an unyielding responsibility to work hard for the betterment of his community and the world around him. Life, he believes, should be built strictly on effort and tangibles, not an elusive faith.

But that belief is challenged when a bill to spearhead volunteerism leads him to canvassing efforts at Detroit’s legendary diner, Sal’s Place, and a meeting with Heather Cavanaugh. His polar opposite, the street-smart beauty challenges his heart and perceptions. She’s the head stylist at Optiva, a trendy, upscale hair salon in downtown Detroit, as well as a tireless volunteer giving back to the city she loves in honor of the God she serves.
Love blooms, gradually shifting Matt’s perceptions. But when a life-threatening illness in his family challenges that fledgling faith, will he be able to hold fast to his newfound beliefs? Will he discover that faith makes all things possible and love makes all things beautiful?
Sounds like a good book.

AND  A BOOK GIVEAWAY!

My writer of the day is Ada Brownell, also writing as A.B. Brownell. She’s  been writing for Christian publications since age 15 and spent much of her life as a daily newspaper reporter  at The Pueblo Chieftain in Colorado. In her retirement, she continues to freelance for Christian publications writing both non-fiction and fiction books. Ada has been gracious enough to give away an e-copy of Joe The Dreamer: The Castle and the Catapult.  Here’s a few ways to connect with her.

Here’s a short  blurb about her book, Joe the Dreamer: The Castle and the Catapult

Enter an area where people are missing and radicals want to obliterate Christianity from the earth. After Joe Baker’s parents mysteriously disappear, he finds himself with a vicious man after him. Joe and an unusual gang team up to find his mom and dad. The gang is dedicated to preventing and solving crimes with ordinary harmless things such as noise, water, and a pet skunk instead of blades and bullets. Joe reads the Bible hoping to discover whether God will answer prayer and bring his parents home. In his dreams, Joe slips into the skin of Bible characters and what happened to them, happens to him—the peril and the victories. Yet, crying out in his sleep causes him to end up in a mental hospital’s juvenile unit. Will he escape or will he be harmed? Will he find his parents? Does God answer prayer?

Sounds interesting! Here’s an excerpt from Chapter One of Joe the Dreamer: The Castle and the Catapult

“Mom and Dad didn’t just go off and leave us.” Joe felt that truth clear to his bones. He glanced at the police officer, who dug into his

pocket and then pulled out key. When the police drove away, Joe’s breath came in gasps. What had happened to his parents?

* * *

About fifty miles away, two big hairy men shoved Darin and Rose Baker across the drawbridge into Sir Henry’s castle. They stumbled up a wide marble-tiled stairway, hands tied behind their backs.

“We got ‘im,” said the beast who pushed Darin into the room. “But his wife was with ‘im. Couldn’t leave a witness.”

Darin’s eyes adjusted to the dimly lit room. Rose seemed to be in shock. Then he turned his gaze so he could see what his wife stared at.

It couldn’t be true!

“Untie these folks,” Kermesis told the goons.

“Kermesis! You’re involved in this? I thought when you turned the business over to Caleb—.” Darin’s voice echoed in the chamber-like

room.

“That I forgot you have a computer software design I want?”

“It’s mine.” Darin watched as the big thug released the bonds.

“Now listen here, Darin. I was paying you good money when you created that design.”

“I created the program at home on my own time. It’s not yours.”

“Where is it?”

Over in a corner, Darin recognized several leaders of local churches and a priest. Apparently they had been abducted, too.

“I want that software design, Darin. If you don’t tell us where it is, we’ll get your children.”

“No!” Rose screamed. Her high-pitched shrieks continued until the monster who had nabbed her in the parking lot put his pillow-sized

hand over her nose and mouth. She pulled at the massive fingers as she struggled for air, her face turning red, then bluish.

Wow! I wonder what will happen next?

Thanks for sharing your book with us, Ada! If you want to be considered for the e-book giveaway, leave a comment. Winner will be picked next Monday, July 15.

Until next time…

She’s written The Healer’s Touch – Volume 1 Days of Messiah Series.
Book Blurb:
Aaliyah’s last chance at winning her husband’s love is destroyed when she is banished from her home as an ‘unclean’ sinner.  Struggling to survive amidst the fear, grief and bitterness of living in a leper colony, she would give anything just to see her son again. When rumors of a Healer from Nazareth reach the colony, Aaliyah wonders if this man could really heal her, or if He would despise her like the rest of her people. It is now that Aaliyah must make the most difficult decision of her life: risk
her life to appear in public, or die a leper.

Sounds interesting! I couldn’t even imagine trying to write a story set in Bible times. The amount of research needed must have been monumental. Great job, Amber.

My Treasures – Four Week Mini Bible Study by Heather Bixler {4/9/13} – $25 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway!

Title: My Treasures – Four Week Mini Bible Study (Becoming Press Mini Bible Studies)

By Heather Bixler

About the Book:

There are plenty of Christian resources out there telling us how to manage our money. From budgeting, to couponing, to saving, to investing, (there are numerous) books, courses, and blogs available for all Christians to learn how to steward their money to better honor and glorify the Lord.

I think these resources are amazing and have often used them in my own life in order to become debt free and learn how to better manage my family’s finances. But one burning question always entered into my mind as I began to budget, coupon, and bring down my debt – what’s the point? my heart still struggled daily with greed and fear when it came to money.

In this four week mini Bible Study, we are not going to examine how to manage our money. Instead we are going to examine our heart towards money. One thing I have learned when it comes to money is this, it’s really not about HOW much money you have that will determine whether you are broke or rich, it’s WHERE your heart is towards God and towards money.

If we want to be good stewards of our money and honor God with the resources He has given us, then we need to look at our heart, not JUST our budget.

DARKEST HOUR by Nike Chillemi

BOOK GIVEAWAY!

My WRITER OF THE DAY is Nike Chillemi.  Nike and I go way back….we’ve never met in person, but we’re in some of the same writing groups and we’ve often helped each other out. So, I’m very excited to have her here. Nike has put together a great giveaway for one of my readers.  She’s going to give away a copy of each of her earlier novels in the Sanctuary Point series–that’s three books!  These are ebooks,, just so you know. To win the books, leave a comment. The winner will be chosen on April 1.

Like so many writers, Nike started writing at a very young age. She still has the Crayola, fully illustrated book she penned (penciled might be more accurate) as a little girl about her then off-the-chart love of horses. Today, you might call her a crime fictionista. Her passion is crime fiction. She likes her bad guys really bad and her good guys smarter and better.

Her latest release, Darkest Hour is the fourth in the Sanctuary Point series, a murder mystery sent in the  late-1940s and, of course, there’s a touch of romance. A widow is framed by powerful people but she didn’t pull the trigger. Can she find out who?

Here are the opening lines from DARKEST HOUR:

Lucinda Byrne backed further away from the dead body of her boss, the sides of his suit jacket wide open. Blood oozed from a hole in the center of his chest and spread over the front of his white dress shirt and yellow tie. Dark, angry red… sticky…

OOOH…sounds good to me!

DON’T FORGET, leave a comment if you want to be entered to win the book package.  And here’s a question to answer if you can’t think of anything to write: What do you enjoy most when reading historical fictions?

By the way, if you’re wondering, DEE was the winner of Matthew R. Horn’s book from last week’s giveaway.  Congratulations, DEE.

BOOK GIVEAWAY with Matthew R. Horn!

My Writer of the Day is MATTHEW R. HORN and he’s been gracious enough to give away his new book-NOTHING GOOD IS EVER FREE (except his book, of course!)– to celebrate the honor! And it’s a real-honest-hold-in-your-hand book instead of an e-book. Thanks, Matthew!  I know my readers will enjoy it. More about the book at the bottom of the post. If you want to win the book, leave a comment and Matthew might just pick you. Winner will be chosen on March 25!

Growing up in north-central Indiana, Matthew learned the value of a good imagination at an early age. Bob Kane and Bill Finger’s Batman, Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt, and Ian Fleming’s James Bond were constant visitors to Matthew’s imaginative world. At the age of 14 Matthew began taking writing classes from none other than his own mother. Having a Master’s in English, she wanted her children to be able to communicate properly with the written word. Of course, Matthew hated this. However, nearly twenty years later the lessons learned combined with the imagination born from sheer boredom have cultivated a desire to share his imaginings.
So, let’s learn a little about Matthew and his writing journey….

My Writing Journey
By Matthew R. Horn

Where does this story begin; with an elementary school boy trying to write scary stories with his friends during recess? Does it begin with a college age kid getting inspiration from Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, but failing to follow through after being intimidated by the amount of research required to write a book like that? Maybe it begins with a young man, recently graduated from college, sitting down in front of his computer and writing out a five page outline for a fantasy novel that still isn’t published or anywhere near ready for publishing.

Maybe it goes all the way back to my Mother receiving her Master’s in English from Indiana University. After all, it was her who forced me to sit down during my summers off and take writing lessons; lessons which I don’t think I ever passed. I’ve never seen more red ink in my life.
I think the story starts during the summer when I was around ten or twelve years old, sitting at the dining room table when my friends were out swimming and playing. I’ve always thought I was a decent writer in school. After going through those summer courses I felt competent at putting pen to paper. I used that knowledge for almost nothing. I passed my language courses using it; little else. It wouldn’t be until five years after graduating from college that I really put it to the test.
I recall reading The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. I felt the uncontrollable urge to try my hand at a fantasy book. I spent the better part of the next three months churning out a 700 page epic fantasy novel. I have no idea why that time was the best time, and of course the writing was horrible. I think the content was great, but I’m not sure how any reader could sift through the poor punctuation and average word usage to figure that out. Since then, I’ve written a sequel to the fantasy book, two thrillers, and have started numerous others; each one getting better than the last (in my humble opinion).
My only regret is that I wish I could have learned to love writing then the way I do now. Telling stories using the written word has become more than a hobby. Even if Brighton Publishing had never picked up my book, The Good Fight, I think I would still be writing. Even if I lived my life never having anything published, I would still write. It’s a passion, and I hope that one day my writing can work to influence readers in a positive way. Only the Lord knows what is in store. I just hope the adventure continues to be as enjoyable and rewarding as it has been so far.

Talk about talented!

The very talented Christine Lindsay is my guest blogger today. Not only is she a published author but she also creates book covers, including her own. Let’s hear what she has to say…..

One of the advantages of working with a small and new press is that they often work with the authors to create the front covers. With writing and art fixed on the same side of the brain, writers are often visual artists as well, as I am and so is my publisher. But the MOST FUN I ever had in my life has been in helping WhiteFire create the front covers of my first two books with them.

It all started out when WhiteFire emailed me with pictures of models they thought would fit my character in Book 1 of my series, Twilight of the British Raj. Book 1 Shadowed in Silk had a character by the name of Abby Fraser. As I looked at the model’s photos, they reminded me of my birth-daughter, Sarah, the child I had relinquished to adoption when she was three days old and whom I was reunited with 20 years later. I sent them photos of Sarah, and WhiteFire thought she was beautiful, so that’s what started my deep involvement in my own covers.

This also allowed me to use the sari silk that I had purchased in India on a writing missions trip for the cover. So I hired a photographer and we did the photo-shoot in my home. My birth-daughter Sarah was delighted to help. I put together two costumes for that cover—a western one and an eastern sari. I borrowed the straw-boater hat from a lady at church, and bought the skirt and blouse at a thrift shop. The jewelry was handed down to me from a great-aunt, and was actually from the Titanic era.

Here are some of the photos we took that day.

Christine Lindsay

I sent those photos to my publisher as well as photos taken in India during my missions trip which they used as backdrop. And here is the final result of that book cover, back and front.

Then Book 2 came along. And I asked if my daughter—the girl my husband and I have—could be the next model on Captured by Moonlight.

After seeing Lana’s photo, WhiteFire was delighted to have me do the front cover for that novel. Now the main character in Captured by Moonlight is Laine Harkness—who in no way is anything to do with my daughter, Lana. I just liked the names.

WhiteFire with my suggestions had a dress designed for the cover by Jordan Newhouse to fit the year 1922. My editor at WhiteFire, Roseanna White, chose the background which she purchased from iStock. The back cover was a photo I had purchased for the book trailer for Shadowed in Silk, and we used it for this book too by adjusting the color.

Here is  the final results of that shoot.

Today’s WRITER OF THE DAY is H. L Wegley. His debut novel, HIDE AND SEEK, recently released. If you love suspense, thrillers, and romance, then this is the book for you! I enjoyed it!!  And he’s giving away an ecopy of the book. All you need to do is leave a comment and you’re in the drawing for the free ecopy of the book. How easy is that???

H. L. Wegley served in the USAF as an Intelligence Analyst and a Weather Officer. He is a Meteorologist who worked as a Research Scientist in Atmospheric Physics at Pacific Northwest Laboratories. After earning an MS in Computer Science, he worked more than two decades as a Systems Programmer at Boeing before retiring in the Seattle area, where he and his wife of 46 years enjoy small-group ministry, their seven grandchildren, and where he pursues his love of writing.

Let’s take a look at the FIRST LINES:

6:00 a.m. Saturday, March 18

Never practice unwise behavior.

Lee Brandt made that vow as a teenager the same year he swore off dating. Now, here he was thirteen years later parked on a secluded road with a member of the opposite sex.

I really hate irony.

He glanced at the woman sitting in the driver’s seat. Jennifer Akihara was the most beautiful woman he’d ever met. She was also the most intelligent. Most guys would die to be sitting here on this Western-Washington mountain road with Jennifer. When he glanced into the passenger-side mirror, it appeared likely that he would.

A vehicle slowed on the highway, and a blast of air left his lungs.

Jennifer’s gaze froze on the rearview mirror and she gasped.

Those lights had pursued them most of the night.

The vehicle turned towards them.

That sent his heart racing.

In an instant, their dead-end hideout turned into a trap.

Jennifer cut the engine and Lee took her hand. Despite the rising panic, awareness of their first touch etched an indelible mark in his memory.

So, what do you think? Definitely intriguing. And that’s just the start of the action!

What’s your favorite type of book to read? Suspense? Romance? A little of both? Don’t forget to leave a comment if you want to win the book! Winner will be chosen on Sunday, Feb. 10!

God Bless and Good Reading!
