A Writer’s Life–Part 6

THE DAVID YEARS

With the release of The David Years, I thought I’d share about how the book came to be. The David Years is the second in my Puzzle House series so before I can tell you about The David Years, I have to tell about Puzzle House first.

AMAZON LINK

The stories I usually write are mystery and suspense novels. Puzzle House and The David Years are anything but mystery or suspense, so how did that happen? When a writer’s life changes dramatically, their writing life usually changes in some way as well. In 2012, my life changed dramatically! I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors and a rare genetic condition called Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2). The tumors are almost always non-cancerous, but that didn’t stop them from affecting my health in so many different ways.

I’ll share a writer’s secret with you. Writers often use their writing as therapy–at least I do. In 2016, I felt the need to write something different–a story where the main character has the same type of brain tumors I have as well as NF2. And Puzzle House was born! The story is definitely NOT autobiographical–it’s not about me. The only similarity is that the main character and I have the same type of brain tumors because of NF2.

After that–it’s pure fiction!

Puzzle House is a much more spiritual book than my mystery and suspense books. Because of that, I wrote a devotional book to go along with Puzzle House and called it DEVOTIONS FROM PUZZLE HOUSE. My publisher classifies it as Women’s Fiction, but I simply call it a Christian Fiction novel. By the way, men like it as well!

OOOPS! I’m out of time for now so I’ll finish this story in the next edition of A Writer’s Life.

THE STRING–CALEB BREAKEY

Welcome to the string. Let’s go over the ground rules.

Rule #1: Participation is mandatory.
Rule #2: If any one person refuses to play, the threats to all players will come to pass.

Since this is my game, allow me to introduce myself. I am the conductor. Just as musicians in a symphony must follow the conductor’s direction, the selected students and staff of Trenton University must submit to my commands . . . or risk massive chaos and deadly consequences. Even that pesky university cop, Markus Haas, who thinks he’ll find a way out of the impossible dilemma in which I’ve trapped him. Oh, the surprises I have for him.

Ready to play?

The String (Deadly Games Book 1) by [Breakey, Caleb]

Warning: Don’t start this book if you don’t have time to finish it. Each page keeps you guessing about what’s going to happen next. The String may be Caleb Breakey’s debut novel but it won’t be his last! If you like neat little stories that go from point A to point B to point C, don’t read this book. But if you love lots of action and suspense, this is the story for you. I’ve kept this review purposefully vague about the plot–I don’t want to ruin it for you.

Caleb Breakey has done a wonderful job creating a story that will not only keep you reading but keep you awake at night.

That’s how scary it is.

When Puzzle House was released, I also released a devotional to go along with it–DEVOTIONS FROM PUZZLE HOUSE. And to celebrate the release of The David Years, it’s FREE right now on Amazon. Simply click on the link and it will take you to Amazon.

Anyway to continue the tradition, I wrote a new devotional to go along with THE DAVID YEARS. The title is MEDITATION IS NOT A DIRTY WORD! How I got that title is that at one point in The David Years, Nia gets involved with a questionable group that promotes meditation. I won’t give away the plot, but…it’s an interesting story line.

And the good news is that this devotional is also FREE right now for a limited time!

Why are they free? Because I don’t really care about making money from them. I’m not against making money, but that’s not why I write devotions and these devotional books. I want to share what I’ve learned about the amazingly, awesome power of God’s Word. So don’t miss out, they’ll only be FREE for a few days so click on them right now.

THE DAVID YEARS

Just released–THE DAVID YEARS!This is the second novel in the Puzzle House series. In Puzzle House, Nia was anointed to become a healer. The David Years starts out where Puzzle House stops but quickly moves to Nia’s high school graduation. My college years are long, long past so I thought it might be hard to get into the mindset of a college student, but it really wasn’t. I thought back to all the mistakes I made during that time and the story took off from there!

AMAZON LINK

Nia looked at her aunt and asked, “So what am I ‘spose to do now?”

“Have you ever heard of King David from the Bible? There were a lot of years between the time David was anointed as the king and he actually became the king. David was tested many times during those years. Those years were very important to David’s growth as a man so that he would be the king God wanted him to be when the time was right.”

“So what are you saying, Auntie?”

“I’m saying these are your David years.”

And so the story begins. Most of the book takes place after Nia’s high school graduation during her first year in college. She’s impatient to begin her time as healer and tries to make that happen in her timing—not God’s. But God will not be rushed and whether Nia likes it or not, she’s still in her David Years—her learning years. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, ‘we learn from our mistakes.’ Well, Nia learns a lot that year. In other words, she makes a lot of mistakes.

Even though Nia is a college student, her story will resonate for anybody who’s facing changes in their life, no matter the age. We all have learning years throughout our lifetime—our very own David Years. Life changes whether we want it to or not. A new marriage. A baby. A divorce. A new job. Retirement. We all struggle with finding our place in the world, especially when life changes.

The good news is that as Christians, we may not have all the answers, but we know where to find them.

Stretching With God!

I’m not young, skinny, or athletic, but I have exercised most of my adult life. I believe in exercise! I’m not all that healthy but I keep trying because our bodies are the temple of God. So we should do what we can to be as healthy as we can be.

In 2012, I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors and subsequently a genetic disease called Neurofibromatosis Type 2. If you want to hear more about that, you can read my book, GOD, LIFE & HULA HOOPS.

Anyway, without going into all the gory details, I’m completely deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the others. Along with that I also have multiple other health issues, including  serious balance problems and fatigue among other things.

At one point, I didn’t have the energy to do much of anything and could barely walk.

I decided it was time to take control of my health.

I decided it was time to start exercising again.

I was told I should go to physical therapy for my balance issues. Instead, I started researching it and ending up developing an exercise routine to help with my balance and flexibility. I call it Stretching with God, because I incorporated the seven days of creation into the workout.

So how’s my health now? I’ve lost 50 pounds, I usually do 2-3 miles on the treadmill at least 3-4 times every week, and can bend over to pick stuff off the floor without falling! I still have my struggles, but I’m healthier than I’ve been in a long time. And I believe Stretching with God has helped!

Want to know more about it? Click on the page that says Stretching with God, and it gives the full workout!

Writer of the Day–Carol McClain

Author Carol McClain is an eclectic artist and author. Her interests vary as much as the Tennessee weather—running, bassoons, jazz, stained glass and, of course, writing. She’s a transplant from New York who now lives in the hills of East Tennessee with her husband and overactive Springer spaniel. She is also the president of ACFW Knoxville and the secretary of the Authors’ Guild of Tennessee.

She’s here to talk about her new novel–A New York Yankee on Stinking Creek.

Amazon Link:  https://www.amazon.com/New-York-Yankee-Stinking-Creek/dp/057849115X/ref

What was your inspiration for A New York Yankee on Stinking Creek?

So many things inspired me to write this novel. I moved to Tennessee about four years ago. A hamlet near us had a name that made me laugh . Who’d name their town Stinking Creek, especially as this sweet town has no malodorous water?

I’ve always loved Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. The novel is an anachronous romp into medieval times. I figured I’d play up the idea in a modern day world. I worked in Manhattan for many years. Then I considered Stinking Creek, a small rural village and wanted to play up the perceived differences of the liberal know-it-all and the conservative know-it-all and create a world where we see ourselves, see love and sacrifice, and see what really matters in life.

Which character in the book was the easiest for you to connect with, and why? Which, if any, character proved most difficult, and why?

Ironically, I connect more with Delia Mae “Lia” McGuffrey, the Southern conservative Christian. She’s bound by rules and the desire to please God and to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). I manage to get myself bound up in trying to please God (and others). I can make the whole world—even the Lord—crazy. I started the last paragraph with the adverb ironically. Most people who know me think I’m the more liberal, free-spirited, artistic protagonist. In reality, they’re two halves of a black and white cookie.

What did God teach you during the writing of Stinking Creek? What spiritual truths or nuggets of wisdom do you hope your readers take away from the book?

The extremes of anything are out of balance—extreme religion or no-religion, extreme liberalism or ultra-conservativism. The adage goes there’s a fine line between genius and insanity (which says I’m borderline genius). So too, only a fine line separates the radical liberal and fanatical conservative

What do you do when you’re not writing?

One might ask, what don’t I do? My passions are words and glass. When not writing, I create stained glass, glass garden flowers, and sun catchers.

I’m a member of ACFW Knoxville, and I am the current president. I am also the secretary for the Authors Guild of Tennessee. I love teaching. When situations arise and I can teach, I do so. Life is short. Grab it all.

When I’m not involved with the above, I play Candy Crush.

Thanks, Carol for being my writer of the day.  A New York Yankee on Stinking Creek sounds like a great read.

I Want To Be Wise!

Proverbs 10: 19

When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable. But he who restrains his lips is wise.

Wow. I love this verse.  Many words equals an unavoidable transgression but he who restrains his lips is wise.

I want to be wise.

It may not be the only thing we need to do become more wise, but it’s a good start. Thanks to social media, there’s way too many words out there in the universe. I can’t tell you how many times I’ll read something on social media and my first response will be to write something that won’t be so kind or useful. I’ll even write the post, but most of the time, I’ll delete it before I actually post it.

The times I don’t I usually wish I had.

For some reason we think we have to tell the world how to live, what’s right and wrong, how to feel or not feel. The list can go on and on. But a better choice is to restrain or lips–and our fingers!

All Manner of Things–BOOK REVIEW

All Manner of Things

You know you’re getting old when you read “historical fiction” and it’s set in the time you grew up! And that’s all I have to say about that!

But then again, that’s why I chose to read ALL MANNER OF THINGS by Susie Finkbeiner. I grew up in the sixties and early seventies in a rural community so this book hits close to home.

Deciding to write a Vietnam era book is a brave thing, even now. That time still evokes strong emotions in those of us who lived it. Susie Finkbeiner has done a wonderful job recreating the innocence of the era as well as the conflict that marked the time.

I’m not going to give away the plot, but this is a book worth reading—whether you’re old enough to remember it or not. I’d definitely recommend it!

God Bless & Good Reading!

Writer of the Day–Gail Kittleson

Gail Kittleson is my Writer of the Day. Gail writes from northern Iowa, where she and her husband of forty-one years enjoy grandchildren, gardening, traveling and historical research. After instructing college writing and English as a Second Language, Gail wrote a memoir. Then the World War II bug big her . . . hard! Seven novels later, she’s still hopelessly addicted to this riveting era. Her women’s fiction honors Greatest Generation characters who made a difference despite great odds. Gail’s second love, teaching, has her facilitating workshops and retreats, where she cheers others’ creativity.  You can connect with Gail at http://www.gailkittleson.com or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/GailKittlesonAuthor.

She’s here today to talk about her new book-UNTIL THEN. But first, she shares how the book came to be.

Creativity in Wartime

Madeline L’Engle wrote that when we create, we co-create with Spirit or our muse and also with the recipient. We weave seeds of our imagination into our artistic work and hope they take root, flourish, and touch or change our readers.

My D-Day release Until Then (after the World War II song), features a real WWII nurse/heroine. Dorothy Woebbeking grew up down the street from the Sullivan brothers in Waterloo, IA. The Woebbeking children played with the five Sullivan boys, who all enlisted in the Navy. Like many from rural Iowa, three of Dorothy’s brothers also enlisted in the Army or Marine. And so did Dorothy.

I think she would like this tea bag message I read the other day.

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.

Milton Berle, a comedian in the fifties and sixties, said this. Other versions exist, but this one, short and sweet, fits Dorothy’s modus operandi.

So often in the dangerous trek of the Eleventh Evacuation Hospital across North Africa, through the Invasion of Sicily, up the boot of Italy, northward through France and into Germany, opportunity failed to knock. But Dorothy and others built doors everywhere they went.

They suffered from terrible heat, torrential rain, snowstorms, and enemy fire. A ruthless enemy that didn’t mind aiming at the white cross clearly exposed on hospital tents. But these incredibly faithful workers determined to use every ounce of their expertise to save wounded GIs—or to stay with them through the throes of death.

Someone recently asked me why I wrote this book. Well, Dorothy’s real-life story gripped me, and so did another one. At about the time Dorothy deployed, the worst civilian tragedy of the war occurred in a poor London borough, a horrific loss of life that would affect the community for decades.

Verbalizing our pain helps at times like this, but the war department ordered survivors to keep silent, lest that bugger Hitler hear and think he’d gained the upper hand against the populace. This added suffering—being forbidden to talk about your lost loved ones—is understandable, but so difficult to grasp.

And so Until Then took shape. I’d never tied together two such divergent stories, but the more I wrote, the more I loved them both. I hope readers do, too!

Thanks, Gail, for sharing how the story came to be. Here’s the book cover–front and back.
